Event Description: Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya … war waged by Britain and America in Muslim countries has again become normalised. The spiral of violence tightens. But what does the willingness to use violence do to the soul? How does it damage human consciousness and replicate age-old patterns of imperialism with which we have never come to terms? What alternatives can nonviolence offer, and what are the spiritual dynamics by which it operates? In recent years Alastair McIntosh has lectured on this theme to some 5,000 senior military officers across Europe. Here he will share what he explores with them.

Alastair McIntosh is a Quaker who has, for the past 15 years, spoken on nonviolence at military training institutions in England, Ireland, Switzerland and France. His chapter in a military textbook is used at senior levels of British officer training. His books include Soil and Soul which was launched in 2001 at the Joint Services Command and Staff College. His writing has been described as “world-changing” by George Monbiot, an “inspiration” by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and “truly mental” by Thom Yorke of Radiohead. A Fellow of the Centre for Human Ecology, he lives in Govan and is married to Vérène Nicolas.
